Spring in Halifax starts late and wet, so patience pays off. Working on a soggy lawn in early April does more harm than good. Here is what to do, and when.
April: clean up, do not dig in
- Wait until the lawn is firm underfoot before walking on it or raking.
- Pick up branches, litter and leftover leaves from the fall.
- Gently rake matted grey or pink patches — this is snow mould, and air helps it recover.
- Rake gravel and sand pushed onto the lawn by plows back onto the driveway.
May: first cut and repairs
- Make the first cut once the grass is actively growing and dry, keeping it on the higher side.
- Reseed thin spots and plow damage along driveway and curb edges.
- Edge beds and walkways to reset clean lines for the season.
- Pull early weeds while the soil is soft and roots come out whole.
June: settle into a routine
- Mow weekly through peak growth, following the one-third rule.
- Water new seed lightly and often until it is established.
- Trim early-flowering shrubs and hedges once their first growth hardens off.
Common Halifax spring problems
Salt from roads and walkways can brown the first strip of lawn along the street. Flushing it with water and reseeding in May usually brings it back. Low spots that stay wet longest are also where snow mould shows up first, so give them extra raking.
