How often to mow through the season
- May: growth picks up quickly — start weekly once the lawn has dried out.
- June: peak growth. Weekly cuts keep it from getting away from you.
- July and August: dry spells slow growth; every 7 to 14 days is typical.
- September: cooler nights and rain often bring a second growth spurt.
- October to November: ease off until the final cut of the year.
The one-third rule
Never remove more than about a third of the blade in one cut. Cutting more stresses the grass, browns the tips, and opens room for weeds. This is the main reason regular visits beat occasional big cuts.
The right height
For most Nova Scotia lawns, around 3 inches through summer is a good target. Taller grass shades the soil, holds moisture during dry weeks and crowds out weeds. Lower it gradually in late fall for the last cuts.
