Hedge trimming is priced by the work, not by the hedge. Two properties with the same length of cedar can be very different jobs depending on height, how long it has been since the last cut, and where the clippings have to go. Here is what a Halifax quote is actually based on.
What drives the price
- Length and height. Anything above shoulder height needs ladders or platforms, which slows the work and adds safety requirements.
- How overgrown it is. A hedge maintained yearly is a trim; one left for three or four years is a reshaping job with far more material to remove.
- Species. Cedar, privet, spirea and lilac all respond differently, and some can only be cut back so far without leaving bare wood.
- Access. Narrow gates, slopes, fences, decks and beds on both sides all add time.
- Clean-up and disposal. Raking out clippings and hauling them away is often a real share of the job.
- Shaping detail. A flat formal face with crisp corners takes longer than a rough tidy-up.

How often should hedges be trimmed?
Most Halifax-area hedges do well with one good trim a year. Fast growers and formal shapes that you want looking sharp usually want two — one in early summer once the first flush of growth hardens off, and a lighter tidy later in the season. Avoid heavy cutting in late fall, since fresh growth pushed out before a freeze gets damaged.
If you are unsure, the simplest rule is this: trimming a little every year is cheaper and healthier than rescuing an overgrown hedge every fifth year.
What a proper quote should include
- Which hedges and which sides are being cut, including tops.
- The target height and shape you have agreed on.
- Whether clippings are raked out of the hedge base and beds.
- Whether yard waste is bagged and taken away or left for municipal collection.
- Whether the visit is one-time or part of a recurring schedule.
