Leaves are heavier here than most people expect. Halifax falls are wet, and a layer of maple and oak leaves soaked by a coastal rain turns into a mat that holds water against the grass. Left under snow all winter, that mat is what produces the grey, flattened patches homeowners find in March.
Why leaves have to come off before the snow
Grass keeps breathing and photosynthesising well into November. Cover it and three things happen: light is blocked, moisture is trapped, and snow mould gets the damp, airless conditions it needs. Beds suffer too — packed leaves hide slugs and rot the crowns of perennials.
One clean-up is rarely enough
Leaves in this region do not all drop at once. Most properties with mature trees need at least two passes: an early one in mid to late October, and a final clearing once the last leaves are down, usually in November. A single early clean-up looks great for a week and then disappears under a second wave.
Light coverage can simply be mulched with the mower, which returns nutrients to the soil. Heavy coverage has to be removed — mulching a thick layer just chops the mat into smaller pieces.
What a full fall clean-up includes
- Leaves cleared from lawn areas, garden beds, hedges and along fence lines.
- Corners, window wells and walkways blown or raked out where leaves collect.
- Perennials cut back and dead annuals pulled.
- A final low cut so grass does not go under snow long and matted.
- Debris and yard waste bagged and removed from the property.
Halifax Regional Municipality collects yard waste seasonally in paper bags or approved containers, so timing a clean-up before the last collection of the year saves you storing bags through winter. Check the current HRM collection schedule for your street, as dates shift each year.
What changes the price
Property size, how many mature trees you have, how deep the leaves are by the time we arrive, whether beds and hedges are included, and whether the waste needs hauling away. A property cleared twice on a schedule is usually less work per visit than one left until everything is down and wet.
